I have enjoyed chess off and on throughout my life, but now that I am retired, I thought I would put some effort into learning more about openings, tactics, etc. Every chess book I own requires knowledge of algebraic notation, so I purchased this beautiful little set so I could easily set up positions and follow the sequences without constantly figuring out rank and file coordinates, especially when solving for the dark piece side. This set is small enough to place on a table to one side, with the book on the other side. It is attractive enough to leave set up on display. It has the ranks and files labeled. If I had one recommendation, it would be to use a better contrasting color for the numbers and letters. The set, as mentioned, has two extra queens and two extra pawns for each side. There is also a soft green bag to place the pieces in. The quality of this set is meticulous, and includes tiny, felted brass feet to screw into the bottom inserts so the wood case does not touch the table. There are plenty of cheaper small chess sets available, but I found this set to be worth the money I spent on it.

Very nice chess set
I was looking for a small chess set that would be convenient to travel with, take to lunch breaks, etc. At the same time I was hoping to find a set that looked nice too. I’m extremely happy with this set. The workmanship is impressive! The board is solid and extremely well made. The board doesn’t lay completely flat when opened, due to the 2 hinges, but that doesn’t bother me at all – especially since it gives you the capability to place the pieces inside the board and fold to save space and it makes it perfect to carry. You could easily place a penny or something small under each corner to make the board lay perfectly flat. The detail in each chess piece is very impressive too and the magnets hold well to the board. It’s definitely a small chess set, but that’s what makes it perfect for travel since it doesn’t take up much space. I would definitely recommend this chess board to others. It is extremely well made.

A gorgeous and fully functional mini chess set
This is a well-made product. The size is perfect for my use on my dinner table to minimize space use and clutter. The pieces and the board are finely crafted and a pleasure to use and look at.The four small screw-on elevator legs for the board are a nice bonus that prevents the felt storage compartment and the extra pieces from having contact with the tabletop.The only quibble is that the white king has a weaker magnet than the rest and tends to slide when the board is tipped beyond about 60 degrees. I’m wondering how the magnet can be strengthened somehow.I look forward to a lifetime of good use for this chess set.

$38 for 8 inches may seem expensive, but the quality is so good that you won’t feel like you’re paying $38 for it.

It’s the second product that i own from house of Chess. The quality of craftmanship and material is excellent. The set is too small? Maybe you should read the description more carefully and know that 7.5 inches includes the border and it will be small indeed. With this set you will get your money’s worth and more. If you want small, portable and fun to play with. Look no further this is the game to have.
